Something old something new . . . . BLACK ‘47 (2018) Wednesday 31 August 9.00-11.05pm Film Four P This ‘Irish western’ was on our questionnaire following its cinema release, but didn’t quite pick up the required number of votes. A pity, as it is rather good – exciting, well-performed and always interesting. James Flecheville returns home after fighting for the British abroad, only to take up arms against them in a quest for revenge. REVENGE OF THE CREATURE (1955) Wednesday 31 August 4.00-5.35pm Legend (Channel 41) If, like me, you are a completist then this was Clint Eastwood’s debut. He is the lab technician in a white coat that is looking for some mice! Jack Arnold (see last week) directed the sequel to the previous year’s superior Creature from the Black Lagoon.

This week is a good one for westerns, including:
THE SEARCHERS (1956) Sunday 21 August 1.50-3.45pm BBC 2 We reviewed this masterpiece extensively during the lockdown, but if you haven’t seen it . . . . NO NAME ON THE BULLET (1959) Monday 22 August 12.35-2.15pm 5 Action (Channel 33) A change of pace for Audie Murphy in what is probably (except for Destry) his best starring role at Universal-International. He is the hired killer in town (but who is to be the victim?) and sci-fi specialist Jack Arnold racks up the tension. RELENTLESS (1948) Wednesday 24 August 3.05-4.55pm Talking Pictures (Channel 82) TP continues with its season, very well-curated, of horse operas. This is a relatively rare offering: Robert Young is the cowboy on the run and the nice Technicolor is a bonus. |
